Challenges in managing Phytophthora root rot and Verticillium wilt of red raspberry.
Presented by Jerry Weiland, Research Plant Pathologist, USDA-ARS Corvallis. 12:00 – 1:00pm.
Phytophthora root rot and Verticillium wilt are two soilborne diseases that can significantly reduce the health and lifespan of red raspberry. Surveys show that the pathogens causing these diseases, Phytophthora rubi and Verticillium dahliae, are widespread in the industry. However, current soil fumigation practices are only partially effective at suppressing disease. Research shows tarping increases the effectiveness of soil fumigation, but further improvement is still needed. Recent advances in understanding Phytophthora biology and fungicide sensitivity offer insight into how fungicide treatments might be refined to improve root rot control. This seminar will cover what we have learned about soilborne diseases of red raspberry over the past five years and then discuss potential strategies for improving disease control.
