Brown Bag Seminar | Justin O’Dea | Tales from the East Coast: Of Battles with Soil-Borne Vegetable Diseases and Reinventing Local Grain Economies in New York

April 13, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presented by Justin O’Dea, Regional Agriculture Specialist Faculty.

Justin O’Dea, an Extension Regional Agriculture Specialist in southwest WA, will share his work on two exploratory on-farm trials he led while working with Extension in New York State, which may eventually give rise to future trials here with WSU in western Washington. Justin will first discuss a trial where cucurbit growers in New York attempted to mitigate Phytophthora blight using biofumigation with brassica cover crops and reduced tillage strategies. Justin will then discuss a second, multifaceted trial project with beginning grain growers and various bakers, millers, brewers, maltsters, and distillers to working to re-invent a local grains economy in New York State.
